I’m not entirely sure why I didn’t write this post back in June when I actually had monstera fruit, but oh well. This is an amazing fruit. Positively delicious, and the best single fruit that I’ve ever had, but unfortunately it can have some variance, and if it’s not ripe, it has this strange acidity that’s quite uncomfortable, and if it’s really unripe, and you force through the burning on the lips, you can supposedly loose your voice. Russo’s helpfully wraps them in plastic wrap, and I think that helps a lot, but basically you wait until as many of the green things are loose and move around on the surface (which you can feel through the plastic wrap). Then unwrap the plastic wrap and they all fall off. Eat the white stuff like corn on the cob. It is absolutely delicious.
It’s been a while since I got a new fruit at Russo’s; I’ve mostly exhausted their normal supply, but I recently got to pick up a Korean melon. It’s kind of a cross between honeydew and cantaloupe. Pretty tasty. It was almost soft on the outside by the time I got to eat it.
Not actually that unique, it’s similar to Ugli fruit (probably sold by the same company), but with a better fruit to pith ratio.
In spite of it’s similarity to a grapefruit, the Pomello is pretty tasty, although quite hard to eat. I’ve never met a citrus that fought so hard to keep the wedges together.
Similar to other citruses. The pith is super bitter. I found myself not even eating the skins of the wedges. Other than that it is pretty tasty. Not as good as a clementine or orange though.
According to Wikipedia, Mark Twain described the cherimoya as the “most delicious fruit known to men.” The first time I had it, it was clearly not ripe, and tasted kind of pine-y; I was very skeptical of his claim. The second time though, I let it soften for a really long time, until I almost thought it was past it’s prime. It was not, and was quite delicious. Similar in flavor to Monstera fruit, with a hint of papaya to it, but without the monstera’s threat of loosing your voice, it is quite delicious (I’m not sure that I would describe it as the most delicious, but Mark Twain probably didn’t shop at Russo’s).
